Youth: Gain Leadership Skills at Colorado State Patrol Youth Academy

The Department of Public Safety is recruiting high school age youth from all backgrounds and areas of Colorado who would like to gain skills in leadership, self defense, and criminal justice by participating in the Colorado State Patrol Youth Academy.

In order to recruit an additional 8-10 participants, the application deadline has been extended to July 20. 

About the Youth Academy
This academy is FREE. It helps develop future leaders and familiarizes cadets with basic elements of the CSP academy. 

Training includes:

  • Team Building and Leadership
  • Ethics in Law Enforcement
  • Defensive Driving
  • Firearm Safety and Familiarization
  • Police Communications Procedures
  • History and Philosophy of the CSP
  • Crime Scene Investigation
  • Building Searches
  • Traffic Stops
  • Self Defense

The Academy is five days long:

  • Two virtual days (date to be determined) 
  • Three in-person sessions on August 20, 21, and 22.

Criteria

To be considered, you must:

  • Be a Colorado resident aged 16 or older 
  • Be a high school junior or senior in the fall of 2021 or a 2021 high school graduate
  • Complete a 500-750 word essay
  • Possess a valid driver's license issued on or before August 1, 2021
  • Show proof of current medical health insurance
  • Provide a Doctor Certification of Ability to Participate (physical) within the past year
  • Agree to a criminal and driver history check  
  • Provide two letters of recommendation
  • Complete an application and local Interview, scheduled virtually after application submission
