CDPS SkillBridge Internship Program

Gain valuable experience to transition into the civilian workforce.

The Department of Defense (DoD) SkillBridge program is an opportunity for military service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during the last 180 days of service. SkillBridge connects Service members with industry partners in real-world job experiences.

The Department of Public Safety proudly participates in the SkillBridge program, welcoming military members to work alongside our public safety experts in a range of areas of expertise.

All internships require a minimum commitment of 24-32 hours to the project and assigned work unit, fulfilled during core business hours.  A total of 8 to 16 hours per week will be allowed for DOD or VA-related commitments and CDPS networking and events/trainings

  3. If you see an opportunity that interests you and you want to get started, fill out fill out the CDPS SkillBridge Intake Questionnaire.
  4. A CDPS HR representative will contact you to see if you are a good fit for the project and team.
  5. All Skillbridge interns are onboarded on every third Monday of the month.

Current Open Internship Opportunities

Update Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Training - Division of Fire Prevention and Control, Center of Excellence
  • Duration: 5 weeks, 20 hours per week
  • Travel or location requirements: CoE, Rifle, hybrid possible with some in-person presence required: meeting the CoE group, seeing the facility and taking the Colorado State UAS training course.
  • Skills and ADAA requirements: 
    • Familiar with PowerPoint 
    • An understanding of teaching and education 
    • An interest and desire to learn and pilot UAS
Website Accessibility Remediation & UX Improvement - Executive Director’s Office
  • Duration: 6 months
  • Travel or location requirements: Remote and hybrid, required to report to the Lakewood office based on business need.
  • Skills and ADA requirements: 
    • Website analysis and coding
    • Experience creating and maintaining websites using content management systems
    • Experience developing and editing websites with HTML, CSS, and other relevant coding languages
    • Knowledge and understanding of current WCAG standards and accessibility best practices

Catalog CDPS Technology Solutions - Colorado State Patrol, Academy
  • Duration: 4 months
  • Travel or location requirements: Some on-site work in Golden
  • Skills and ADAA requirements: 
    • Knowledge of various different technology applications and software
    • Experience creating a database, catalog, or directory
    • Ability to quickly gain trust and build relationships with people of all different levels in the organization.
    • Work with divisions to discover the many varied technology solutions and applications in use; Collect them all into a central list.&

CDPS SkillBridge Program Lead - Executive Director's Office, HR

Consists of: Operational and technical program management of the CDPS DoD Skillbridge Program, technical assistance to applicants interested in CDPS programs, planning and coordination of events, working with CDPS program managers on making their projects, internships publicized for Skillbridge intern placements. 

  • Duration: 6 months
  • Travel or location requirements: Lakewood; hybrid, mostly remote; occasional travel during the work week

HR Research & Analysis - Executive Director's Office, HR

Work in a team environment and research best practices in recruitment, marketing, pre-employment screening, and other related topics; develop and conduct surveys; use available data sources to analyze trends, develop dashboards and write reports.

  • Duration: 6 months - Full time and/or part time, 8-10 hours per week possible 
  • Travel or location requirements: Lakewood; hybrid, mostly remote; occasional travel during the work week

Policy & Background Research - Executive Director's Office, HR

This project has two sub-projects:

  1. Research and outreach on the national scale regarding polygraph use in law enforcement positions. Compile and compare findings: history, current use, impact and cost. Interview internal stakeholders on the efficiency and effectiveness of using polygraphs of each CDPS job classification.
  2. Research medical requirements for dispatcher positions. Research includes other local law enforcement agencies, city, county, ogre states and federal agencies. Compile report containing findings.

HR Systems & Reporting - Executive Director's Office, HR

Create reports in the following areas: Recruiting (time to fill, turnover), Compensation, EDI. Research available CDPS systems for accurate reporting and provide data/results to leadership as needed.
